If you’ve been following along, you know that we have been taking a short break from writing about painting-related topics. We’ve instead detoured into a few discussions that stem from our hot and dry weather. If you have missed our previous posts, you can catch up first by reading about how to protect your landscaping while still conserving water , and then peruse our last article: Practical, Water-Saving Tips for Modesto and the Central Valley Area.
Unfortunately, the forecast ahead shows more hot weather without much relief in sight. So, let’s set your home and landscaping aside for a moment and instead focus on you and your health. After all, this kind of weather doesn’t only take a toll on your property.
Two of the most common health hazards that many people face are heat stroke and heat exhaustion. Let’s take a closer look at both!
What Is the Difference Between Heat Stroke and Heat Exhaustion?
Heat exhaustion is nothing to take lightly! Symptoms may include:
- Headache
- Nausea
- Exhaustion
- Weakness
- Feeling like you might faint
This is caused by excessive exposure to heat, but specifically is due to dehydration and lack of salt in the body. The key is to get out of the sun, drink hydrating fluids, and relax as much as possible. In short, cool down!
Heat stroke is the more severe cousin of heat exhaustion. Your body has essentially lost its ability to regulate its temperature at this point, and you may be experiencing the following:
- Nausea
- Fatigue
- Confusion
- Fever
- Vomiting
- ...and more
Heat stroke needs to be treated by a doctor because of the potentially dangerous (and even fatal) side effects. Get out of the sun, cool down as much as possible, and contact a medical professional.
How Do You Avoid Heat Stroke and Heat Exhaustion?
- Don’t spend excessive amounts of time outside
- Wear light clothing
- Hydrate - Your selection of beverage is hugely important! You need real hydration, not just a cold drink. Stick with water, and avoid caffeine.
- If you have to be outside, spray yourself down with water occasionally if you are able
- Take breaks from your activities
- Can you possibly work either early in the morning or late in the day?
