What do you do when you want a new look in your kitchen, but don’t want a full remodel? Maybe your kitchen works well and meets your needs… It’s just that honey oak finish that isn’t doing it for you anymore.
Cabinet painting could be the perfect solution.
Rather than deal with the massive expense, headache, and timeline of a full renovation, painting can radically transform your kitchen in about a week, depending on the size of the space.
Today, let’s take a quick look at how it all works, then we’ll share a kitchen we recently painted for Sharla in Oakdale.
How Do You Paint Kitchen Cabinets?
Some homeowners try to tackle it as a do-it-yourself project. How hard can it be, right? We get why it’s tempting! But here’s the thing: if you’re going to do the job the right way, it’s a labor-intensive process that requires a lot of skill. Sure, you can slap a coat of paint on your doors and drawers with a brush, but how is it going to turn out? And will it be durable enough for a busy, high-traffic kitchen?
Professional cabinet painting involves a process that looks like this:
Careful project containment: paper on the floors, masking, protecting surrounding surfaces and countertops, etc.
Removing doors and drawer faces, plus hardware.
Deep cleaning and degreasing to remove any residue, followed by sanding, then cleaning again. This is also a perfect time to make any light repairs that might be necessary.
With the surfaces cleaned and prepped, it’s time to prime! Unless a specific finish technique is requested, we use professional-grade spray equipment to lay down a smooth, uniform finish. The primer in particular is essential since it creates a receptive surface for the new paint, plus acts as a barrier to prevent any wood grain from bleeding through the topcoat.
In a controlled environment, we then spray the final finish coats, sanding and touching up as we go to ensure the best results.
Everything is brought back to your home and reinstalled, the space is cleaned, and we’re ready to walk through with you to be sure everything is just right.
Again, having the right equipment, products, and technique is absolutely essential. Otherwise your cabinet paint won’t look as good or last as long.

As promised, here’s a look at Sharla’s transformed kitchen. The difference is drastic, going from dark and dated to light and bright. The island accent color is a particularly nice touch.
