Paint cans are one of those things that tend to accumulate over the years. Especially when there is still some paint left over in each can, they can also be one of those items that people don’t really know what to do with once they don’t need them anymore.
Here are a couple of ways to get those old cans out of your house:
- If you have oil paint you want to get rid of, it can’t be disposed of normally, so the best option is to call your municipal government or fire department non-emergency number to find out where you can drop the paint off at an hazardous waste disposal event. (They usually have local hazardous waste disposal drop-offs twice a year.)
- Look for one of these groups to donate your extra paint to: charities that rehabilitate or build homes such as Habitat for Humanity , or theater groups with limited budgets for building sets.
- Now for the latex, acrylic and water-based paint you can’t get rid of, after you let it dry out, you can simply just throw it away.
Let me stop you though, before you take off all the lids and wait for the paint to dry out. This method could take weeks (even months), and also allows all of the paint fumes to escape in, or around, your home which is hazardous.
Here are the best ways to let the paint dry:
- Get some paint hardener and add it to your paint.
- Stir some kitty litter or other absorbent into your paint.
- Collect some cardboard boxes, flatten them and paint them. After they dry out, you can throw away the boxes and empty paint cans like any other garbage.
